Little incubator,<br \/>\nlittle devil swathed in a child\u2019s chest. <\/p>\n<p>___________________________________________________<\/p>\n<p>Pets are stupid. I\u2019ve never understood why<br \/>\nwe want to clean up another animal\u2019s shit.<br \/>\nWe already live inside of one that constantly<br \/>\nneeds to be fed and cleaned and put down<br \/>\nfor naps in the dark. My hand likes to be held.<br \/>\nI keep telling you.<br \/>\n___________________________________________________<\/p>\n<p>I want to drop a tiny white feather into you.<br \/>\nI want to discover at the last second that<br \/>\nI\u2019m a witch doctor and pull disease out<br \/>\nlike a wishbone. Waiting rooms are instructive.<br \/>\nBut not that instructive.<br \/>\n___________________________________________________<\/p>\n<p>Suffering is having your body full of nails.<br \/>\nJust replace your blood with nails and see what I mean.<br \/>\nWhat a mirror. What a black lake full of stars. <\/p>\n<p>___________________________________________________<\/p>\n<p>My mother dreamt she gave birth to a wolf,<br \/>\nbut I came out instead. My family talks about this<br \/>\nlike it\u2019s a joke. Somewhere in the mountains a howl<br \/>\nis gathering. Somewhere guts spill across the snow<br \/>\nlike hot snakes&#8211;I try to explain over and over that<br \/>\nthe pattern is remarkable for its beauty but they don\u2019t listen.<br \/>\nStop signing your name every fucking place, they say,<br \/>\nand really mean it this time.<br \/>\n___________________________________________________<\/p>\n<p>Your purple t-shirt should have a horse on it&#8211;<br \/>\nyour chest would be under the horse\u2019s chest.<br \/>\n___________________________________________________<\/p>\n<p>Can I live vicariously through your ekphrasis?<br \/>\nArt is an arm but a shitty hugger. Its shadow can be<br \/>\npinned down and put on a wall. Paris wants you<br \/>\nto like it better than London&#8211;they are both full<br \/>\nof graves. Vestigial marble bodies people buildings<br \/>\nthe size of stadiums and you are lost inside.<br \/>\n___________________________________________________<\/p>\n<p>SARAH BARTLETT lives in Portland, OR.
