Poems by Marc Paltrineri"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>FOXGLOVE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>if you\u2019d like your arms to<br \/>\nvanish hold them still<br \/>\nvery still against your body<br \/>\nthey will vanish just like glass<br \/>\nyour thoughts they will thank you<br \/>\nfor letting more light in<br \/>\nand your guests will bow remarking<br \/>\namongst themselves<br \/>\nhow much it feels like<br \/>\na weight\u2019s been lifted and it has<br \/>\nthey are right but be careful<br \/>\nthis trick applies also<br \/>\nto the heart if you stay still<br \/>\nlong enough your heart<br \/>\nwill become windows<br \/>\ntwo windows on the same floor<br \/>\nof separate apartments in separate cities<br \/>\nin which two strangers<br \/>\nturn off the lights to watch the storm<br \/>\nthrowing a sheet over<br \/>\ntheir separate cities their separate<br \/>\nhearts with<br \/>\npretty much the same view<br \/>\n_______________________________________<\/p>\n<p><strong>FOXGLOVE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I am not a nature poet<br \/>\nfoxglove no really I am not<br \/>\ntrees and clouds they<br \/>\nsurround me you should<br \/>\nsee it where I live<br \/>\nthere are mice in the walls<br \/>\nhere my trust in windows<br \/>\nis growing thin<br \/>\nfoxglove I am not<br \/>\na nature poet I can\u2019t help it<br \/>\nleaves are falling on my head<br \/>\nif I lived in the city perhaps<br \/>\nI\u2019d write about city things<br \/>\nmetrocards and chinese<br \/>\nnewspaper mixed up in my<br \/>\nbed and the streets would seem<br \/>\nslick with the reminder<br \/>\nwe are vulnerable to the<br \/>\nwhims of concrete how soon<br \/>\nit might flood or rise<br \/>\nagainst us dear god like sequoias<br \/>\nlook at those buildings come<br \/>\n_______________________________________<\/p>\n<p><strong>FOXGLOVE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I lied I am<br \/>\nnot immortal<br \/>\nthere is no<br \/>\nsuch thing as<br \/>\nzombies at least<br \/>\nnot like that<br \/>\nI am glad<br \/>\nsummer is over<br \/>\nthe leaves are stirring<br \/>\nin their<br \/>\npaper coffins<br \/>\nwe can step<br \/>\nI am sorry<br \/>\nI will die<br \/>\nin all honesty I\u2019d<br \/>\nrather be flying<br \/>\nin a boat across the<br \/>\nocean without a wave<br \/>\nof hubris or<br \/>\nblade of grass<br \/>\nto stop us<br \/>\nto put us in our place<br \/>\n_______________________________________<\/p>\n<p><strong>FOXGLOVE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>is the owl who<br \/>\nflew beside us from<br \/>\nthe city to leafless no<br \/>\nwhere there are things<br \/>\nalong this world<br \/>\nwho look like forests<br \/>\nsomeone sharpened<br \/>\ninto pencils<br \/>\nwhat kind of blue<br \/>\nwould you call that blue<br \/>\ninside our bodies<br \/>\nthe sky<br \/>\nflying through us<br \/>\nowls and interstates<br \/>\nwe too have veins<br \/>\nand scenic vistas<br \/>\n_______________________________________<\/p>\n<p><strong>FOXGLOVE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>you give the wind goosebumps<br \/>\nwhen you say those things gray<br \/>\nhood slipped over tuesday<br \/>\nthe trees are different let\u2019s<br \/>\nhave a party and the fortress<br \/>\ndon\u2019t invite the fortress<br \/>\nit will rain and the gray will soak<br \/>\nour pants the way the blank soaks<br \/>\nthrough the window on this first<br \/>\ncold night of the century<br \/>\nthis new one we\u2019re inventing<br \/>\nand what a pity we can\u2019t keep<br \/>\nthe colors what a pity<br \/>\nsuch a stupid thing to say<br \/>\n<strong>FOXGLOVE<\/strong><br \/>\nit\u2019s funny you say<br \/>\nwe have teeth and<br \/>\nback to sleep again<br \/>\nI steal this for a poem<br \/>\nbecause it\u2019s true<br \/>\ntoday is the first day<br \/>\nof flannel-chested<br \/>\noctober and they are filling<br \/>\nthe streets selling<br \/>\napples and having babies<br \/>\ngrinding apples into juice<br \/>\nand we can marvel at<br \/>\nthe gummy babies we can<br \/>\neat three donuts each<br \/>\nI think I\u2019ll kiss you<br \/>\non the mouth now<br \/>\nwake you up to say aren\u2019t you<br \/>\nglad we have teeth<br \/>\nlet\u2019s eat some apples<br \/>\neven if our gums bleed<br \/>\n_______________________________________<\/p>\n<p><strong>FOXGLOVE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>at all costs<br \/>\npronouns must be<br \/>\navoided<br \/>\nthey leave<br \/>\npaper-trails to the<br \/>\nblood-source poachers<br \/>\nwant your skin will<br \/>\nkill you lined up at the<br \/>\nmall to get it<br \/>\nlet&#8217;s not speak<br \/>\nof you just go<br \/>\nlike the spirit bear goes<br \/>\nsuccinctly into the<br \/>\nforest be<br \/>\nlike the black bear go<br \/>\nput on your white<br
