{"id":3779,"date":"2013-04-23T02:26:02","date_gmt":"2013-04-23T02:26:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sporkpress.com\/?p=3779"},"modified":"2013-04-23T02:26:02","modified_gmt":"2013-04-23T02:26:02","slug":"3-poems-by-paul-adler","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thisissporkpress.com\/archive\/2013\/04\/23\/3-poems-by-paul-adler\/","title":{"rendered":"3 poems by Paul Adler"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Betrothal <\/strong><br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nThe jeweled lips of Elvis open<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;   into an ambient scream,<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nthat echoes through<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;   the bowling alley and into<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nthe all-night liquor store<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;   where you turn from me<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nas if I were one more pearl<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;   in a long necklace of mistakes.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nAmid glass embroidered<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;   corridors people discuss<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nnews with the patient hum<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;   of hornets, and as you walk<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nswiftly toward the subway<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;  it feels as if something else<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nwere approaching, like a song<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp; that plays and is played again<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nwithin me, we struggle always<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;  amid some bright company.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n_______________________________________________<br \/>\n<strong>Texaco Divine<\/strong><br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nBefore his master returned, Argos sang<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;   upon the heap\u2014now the radio<br \/>\ncroons with innocence and I think<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;   that to be remembered is to be<br \/>\nblamed for something, good or not.<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;   A headlight like a narwhal\u2019s tusk<br \/>\npierces the empty parking lot and gilds<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;   a bag of peanuts upon the shelf.<br \/>\nAlready the contents of the convenience<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;   store seems to be refuse, a chaos that<br \/>\nreturns in ebbing waves through<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;  each packaging and assurance of peace.<br \/>\nTiny black coffins, candy bars regard<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;   the night and its array of small, sacred<br \/>\nlights as a dog steps to the window<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;   and begins scratching at the glass.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n_________________________________<br \/>\n<strong>Delineation <\/strong><br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nWhere I fall<br \/>\na field is always burning.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nIt is a chorus of sparrows<br \/>\nmounting toward space.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nMy mother feels my pulse<br \/>\nas if searching for<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nsome smaller animal<br \/>\nwithin me.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nAnd I can tell<br \/>\nthat I am awake<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nbecause this room<br \/>\nand its pale life is my<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nmost recurring dream.<br \/>\nBecause, even now,<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nI am falling<br \/>\nand it is my mother\u2019s voice<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nthat rings as I fall.<br \/>\nAbandoning memory,<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nwhich is a husk of song<br \/>\npreserved by fire,<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nher body becomes<br \/>\na tumble of crows.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nThe entire room blossoms<br \/>\nwith black wings.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n_____________________________<br \/>\n<strong>Paul Adler<\/strong> received his MFA from Columbia University where Matthew Zapruder recently selected his thesis manuscript as the winner of the 2012 David Craig Austin Prize.
