The Self-Room<\/strong>
\n 
\nIn such a room
\nThe paper, covering everything\u2014
\nCeiling, walls, lamp, floor, windows\u2014
\nAbsorbs the hourglass\u2019s sand into a tiny, inked
\nLanguage which crawls noisily
\nInto your lap when you sleep.
\n 
\nIn such a room you are
\nImmortal,
\nThe clock in the corner being safely
\nWrapped by lined pages from a diary;
\nTime, with its weak arms
\nWill never escape.
\n 
\nIn such a room there\u2019s always
\nThe ant trapped
\nInside a window pane;
\nAnd it\u2019s always that invisible ant\u2019s fault
\nThat you (upset about it watching
\nfrom behind the paper)
\n 
\nEnd up running from the room
\nAnd turning brown,
\nLike a cut banana.
\n 
\n

\nGrasshoppers<\/strong>
\n 
\nAnd I watch your lips, see how the
\nWords bounce out through your teeth and
\nMake a skip-dip and dodge and
\nHop
\nFrom one place to another\u2014
\nThey\u2019d hopped right through my heart
\nAnd left a little peephole which I couldn\u2019t
\nStop myself looking through,
\nAs if it were some kind of telescope aimed at
\nThat peephole in yours.
\nHow did that grasshopper get
\nLoose, wreaking havoc\u2014
\nIt never takes account for its actions
\nAnd always jumps too high.
\n 
\nNow who would take a needle and thread
\nAnd sew up those little eyelets of mischief
\nWhere little knots of mock-love
\nButton themselves through?
\nWho will come fill up my
\nGrasshopper hole;
\nAnd who would your
\nSeamstress be?
\n
