WHY NOT STAY IN THE KITCHEN<\/strong>
\n 
\n 
\nBecause what do I do
\nthere but cook eat talk.
\nBecause I do not like
\novens and knives but find
\nthe party punishing.
\nFor me unnatural heat
\nfor the guests souffl\u00e9
\nor would they rather rabbit.
\nI can\u2019t find rabbit
\nthough nearby legions
\nnibble tremble fuck.
\nNothing for the mob
\nrampaging the bathroom
\nto damage a dear
\nsoap dish to yank
\nthe shower curtains
\nthat clicked reassuringly close
\nand open on something like
\nball bearings. Why not
\nbury the hatchet
\nasks a deviled egg. Why
\nwhen the guests advance
\nlike a cell of sleepers
\nwho look like me
\nor you and mean
\nnothing personal
\nwhy when they seize
\nthe kitchen where
\nthe frequency
\nof home accidents turns
\nthe ladyfingers grim
\nwhy do I arrange
\ncrackers and why
\ntouch each one?
\n

\nLONG-TERM COMPANION<\/strong>
\n 
\n 
\nTo forestall loneliness
\nI have had God
\ninstalled permanently
\nin my soul like an iPod
\nwith a never-ending
\nbattery and an all-prayer
\nplaylist or like
\na big daddy
\nor a wiretap
\nand I am certain
\nI am better
\noff. Unlike Emerson
\nI won\u2019t want
\nto visit my love
\nwho has died and won\u2019t
\nopen the coffin
\nand won\u2019t come out
\nshaken calm
\nwon\u2019t forever change
\nmyself or the rhetoric
\nof a new empire where
\nin a depression
\nfilled with farmland
\nmy mother leans
\nagainst a pitchfork
\nand looks as if to say
\nwith so much work here
\nwho needs comfort?
