Now That We Are Finally at War<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Take a school on fire, for instance.<\/p>\n

The teachers catch flame<\/p>\n

but the lessons won\u2019t burn –<\/p>\n

they disperse aerially, over the gym.<\/p>\n

Separated from their wardens they\u2019re useless,<\/p>\n

like a caretaker of genitals.\u00a0 We are left here,<\/p>\n

patting down the trees to make<\/p>\n

sure they are real. Remember the season for tubers,<\/p>\n

for the dentist in the snow<\/p>\n

clapping his gloves together, and for the dead?<\/p>\n

What remains<\/p>\n

of the dismantled music.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Some of us beat on the fire with our coats:<\/p>\n

the whole neighborhood turns out to watch.<\/p>\n

Smokeless women who knew us as children,<\/p>\n

and men clamming the reservoirs, marking us up<\/p>\n

with engineered blows;<\/p>\n

we join and become them<\/p>\n

and go chirping down to the foundations.<\/p>\n

Heaven hovers unfinished,<\/p>\n

a few stars come up through the soil.<\/p>\n

We learn to mourn, to inquire.<\/p>\n

Faith makes us take what we don\u2019t want.<\/p>\n

We sully ourselves first, to make sense of it,<\/p>\n

and then later,<\/p>\n

carrying our parents<\/p>\n

through the snow,<\/p>\n

notice the exhalations of a rabbit<\/p>\n

making the winter mild. Now that we are finally at war,<\/p>\n

we can begin.<\/p>\n
