Gift For The Flies:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The poor are the only ones<\/p>\n

who know how to suck dry a bone,<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

how to leave not even the marrow<\/p>\n

of the dead animal for God<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

to bring to its family in heaven.<\/p>\n

Slavering over the bone,<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

with knives like torches,<\/p>\n

ready for the grand opening-up<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

of the animal\u2019s cave<\/p>\n

and the hopeless suppression<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

of its red-rock blood which will fizzle<\/p>\n

through the dark like a shiver.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

When the lips of a person<\/p>\n

are the only feature that can be made out,<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

we try and match them to a pair of eyes,<\/p>\n

a hair color, a story. They could be anyone<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

we think. Under a blanket we used our nails<\/p>\n

to lift. Cradling the cold in their arms like a young child.<\/p>\n
